Let God Be
If I know anything about God, it is that I know nothing about Him. And as this journey progresses, the realization that I don’t know anything about Him grows. Like most genuine people, I am often wrapped up in a tangled, spaghetti-noodle pile of thoughts when thinking about God. “If God exists, does He see me right now? Can He hear me? What if He does hear me? Should I be afraid? Why would He bother? He may be the only one who can help, so how do I get His attention? What if He’s the reason why my life is going so poorly?” And on and on. My imagination explores all possible answers to see if one particular path makes any sense. But, rarely come to any place of tangible help for current circumstances. Just an empty pile of thoughts, imagination, and helplessness.
I’ve noticed this is a universally common experience for people who spend time thinking of God. There’s no wondering why most conversations between people about God leave no one feeling more enlightened or grounded. Mix in opinions and a handful of religions. There is no comprehensible navigation through that mess. Frankly, I am done with it! I’m tired of thinking and talking about God this way. I need a real, concrete foundation. God is real. He is the most real thing there could ever be. He is constant. He is concrete. Why do we talk about Him, talk to Him, and treat Him as though He is abstract? Our behavior is absurd and offensive.
Follow me into something that can profoundly change the way you and I navigate our thoughts and conversations about God. Let’s just be pragmatic and lay the foundation for who we are talking about before we entertain any thoughts on the topic of Him. I say that this can profoundly change the way we think and talk about God because I believe that nearly all of our thoughts or conversations about God aren’t actually about Him! That is to say that they are completely outside of the foundational character of the person who God must be if He is even to be God at all. And if we aren’t talking within the foundational character of the person of God, then we aren’t talking about Him at all.
You and I are on a journey into the depths of God Himself. The head honcho of everything that has ever existed. We are not interested in anything less. We want to know Him first.
This is the blueprint for the God we are seeking:
God created everything else. Everything that isn’t God, is a created thing. He is the only thing that isn’t created. In some way, he is responsible for everything else that is created. If we aren’t talking about the one who created the universe, the heavens, and beyond, then we aren’t talking about the God we seek.
God is singular. God must be one. There is only one possibility for more than one God, which is that all of them must be completely identical to each other and in complete unity in thought, mind, and action so that they are indistinguishable from one another. The reason why this is the only possibility is that there is no scenario of created things surviving while two eternal beings are in opposition to each other. Their opposition would destroy everything else. If we aren’t talking about a singular God, then we aren’t talking about the God we seek.
God is eternal. He has no beginning or end. In fact, He brought forth “beginning” and “end”. He alone gave those concepts meaning. If we aren’t talking about an eternal God, then we aren’t talking about the God we seek.
God is all-knowing. He does not learn. Knowledge comes from Him. If we are talking about a god who “learns”, then we aren’t talking about the God we seek.
God sees everything. Nothing can be hidden from Him. His creation cannot hide from Him, escape Him, or exist somewhere He cannot go. If we are talking about a god we can hide from, we aren’t talking about the God that we seek.
God is good. He can only be good. If He wasn’t good, it can only mean that there is a higher authority over Him, judging Him as not good; therefore, He would not be God because He would be subject to the higher authority. God is the highest authority and judge of everything else. He alone is completely good. If we are talking about a god whose actions and thoughts aren’t good, we are not talking about the God we seek.
God is LOVE! Most important of all. He is perfect love. Everything He does is love. Every thought He has is love. Every word He speaks is love. His presence is complete love. If we aren’t talking about a God who is complete love, we aren’t talking about the God we seek.
Every day I see people who won’t let God be “God”. They try to redefine Him as something less than He is. They’ll think, “God doesn’t care about this.” That isn’t true. Since God is “God”, He absolutely cares about everything happening in your life. They’ll think, “This whole situation is my fault. God expects me to learn my way out of this.” That isn’t true. Since God is “God”, His thoughts towards you are only complete love. He wants His goodness and love to fill every part of your life.
Every day I see people who won’t let God be “God”. Forgetting the simple truths about Him. Especially when trying to reconcile God as the all-knowing, powerful, creator of the universe with the God who we need right now as the only one who can save us from the immediate disaster. Consider this statement: God – who created the entire universe, all of time and every being in it – is God – who purposefully created me and has His attention on my life. Or: God – all-knowing, powerful, incomprehensible – is God – personal and loving towards me. Something within us, either our minds or our hearts, I don’t know which, won’t let us reconcile those two together very easily. Something within us resists and says that God, who is so big and significant, doesn’t care about me, who is so small and insignificant.
I’m done with thinking about God as less than “God”. It’s offensive to not treat Him as “God.” I’m done with entertaining thoughts, prayers, or conversations about God that don’t line up with the foundations of His character. I’m done with living my life as though I believe in “God”, but don’t expect Him to “be God!” I know there is a God who is and who loves me. He has all the qualities of The Real God and I expect to see Him in my life! I can no longer stomach the thought of living this whole life without experiencing God as “God.” I will see Him do things that only a God could do. Not just one time, because you and I need a God intervention right now, but also because of who He is as God I want to see His godliness again and again! I want to know the all-knowing, powerful, incomprehensible God – who is also personal, loving, and wants to fill every part of my life with His goodness and love. I’m going to let God be “God”. So should you.
